Glossary

  • Adirondack Chair: A unique style of patio/outdoor or casual chair characterized by its distinctive slatted back and angled seat
  • Cedar: Any of several species of wood commonly used in furniture construction that are resistant to rot, water damage and insect damage
  • Chaise Lounge: Also called a ?chaise longue,? which is French for ?long chair,? this is a long lounge chair, designed for reclining
  • Chat Table: A low, often larger table designed to go with a seating arrangement, similar to a coffee table
  • Cypress: A durable wood used in furniture construction that is valued because it naturally resists rot, moisture and insect damage
  • Dining Chair: Different from a standard Adirondack chair because its seat is less steeply angled and it rests on four vertical legs rather than the classic style of the rear legs angling back from the front of the chair
  • End Table: Smaller than a coffee or chat table, designed to provide storage or display space in tighter spaces or as a complement next to other furniture
  • FSC Certified: Made using wood that comes from sources that are socially and environmentally responsible according to the Forest Stewardship Council, an international non-profit environmental group
  • Glider: Similar to a rocking chair or bench, this is a chair or bench with gliding runners that create a smooth back-and-forth motion
  • HDPE: High Density Polyethylene, a sturdy, durable recycled plastic
  • Kiln-dried: A curing process by which moisture is removed from wood lumber using a high-heat oven in order to prepare the wood to be made into furniture
  • Mortise and tenon joinery: A type of joint in wood construction where one piece fits into another (like a peg into a slot) to create a strong joint, usually at a 90-degree angle
  • Ottoman: Foot rest
  • Plastic Lumber: 100% recycled HDPE pieces used in furniture construction; does not contain any wood or natural fiber
  • Polyurethane: A durable, hard-drying, water- and UV-resistant paint or varnish finish
  • Settee: A long bench seat with armrests and back, designed for two persons to sit side-by-side; also called a Loveseat
  • Sunbrella: A brand of fabric designed specifically for outdoor use that resists fading as well as water and mildew damage
  • Tete-a-tete: From the French for ?head-to-head? and meaning ?conversation,? a tete-a-tete is a set of two chairs that face one another and are joined by a central table
